City of Durham Trust 80th Anniversary Conference

Title: Perspectives on Durham’s World Heritage Site

Theme: Exploring positive and collaborative approaches to ways that can help World Heritage Sites to flourish, with specific reference to Durham within the wider world heritage context.

The 80th anniversary of the Trust coincides with the 50th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention and UNESCO has developed a special programme to look forward to the next 50 years. This conference will be Durham’s contribution to that programme.

Date and Time: Saturday 5 November, 10.00 – 1.00.

Registration and refreshments will be in 7 Owengate from 9.15. There is no fee.

Venue: The Pemberton Rooms on Palace Green. It will also be possible to register there.

Programme and Speakers:

  1. Brief Introduction by the Chair of the Trust
  2. The Trust’s vision for the way forward: Michael Hurlow
  3. Panel to present views of local people on the significance of the WHS: Walia Kani, Lucy Szablewska and a WHS Young Ambassador
  4. The significance of the WHS for tourism and the economy: Craig Wilson, Visit County Durham
  5. The role of the Parish Council and the Neighbourhood Plan: Grenville Holland and Sue Childs
  6. Redhills’ Aspiration to Achieve WHS Status: Nick Malyan
  7. Historic England’s perspective: Mike Collins
  8. The UK and UNESCO perspectives: Chris Blandford, President WHUK
  9. Brief Concluding remarks by the Chair of the Trust

WHS Tours

In the afternoon from 2.00 pm there will be opportunities for participants to explore the WHS with tours guided by experts: Adrian Green – Castle; Martin Roberts – Riverbanks; Jane Gibson – World Heritage Site

In addition, in the Durham Museum (St Mary-le-Bow) there is an exhibition of the work of the City of Durham Trust over its 80-year history.
